So what makes a "Bad" decoy? We have all been told to be really, really, careful when using someone as a decoy because a bad one can ruin a dog in one session. But what the heck makes some one a "Bad" decoy?

First thing that comes to mind,
and that you are usually told, is a Decoy that can't absorb in a safe way to keep the dog from injury on a send or courage test, but there is a much worse decoy that no one seems to have thought about. That decoy is the "Boring" decoy, boring by dog standards not the humans.

The decoy without the skills to trip the dogs trigger, to get them into the game. This is the most dangerous kind of decoy, in my opinion. If this is what you encounter, when you first start protection training, you may get the always popular evaluation of the Boring decoy, "Your dog has NO prey drive!" so you put that dog on the shelf and miss a great opportunity to have fun with your dog and be safer at the same time.

Prey drive is a survival instinct nature gives all dogs, like a pair of eyes. Granted there are a few dogs born blind, but really we know a whole lot more are labeled "Low prey drive" than are ever born blind! So watch out for the boring decoy, and for heavens sake if even you get bored watching ????? Well you know what you should do.
